OPS certified/licensed athletic trainers partner with schools and sports organizations across the region. Our dedicated staff help educate athletes, coaches and parents on injury protocols and prevention and are available throughout the year to assist in diagnosing and treating injuries.
OPS athletic trainers are on the front lines of performance injuries and are an extremely valuable asset.

Executive Director
Dr. Jason Russell is the founder and director of Optimum Performance Sports (OPS). OPS is the sports medicine and sports performance division of Lutheran Health Network. He received his B.S. in Kinesiology from Indiana University and his Doctorate degree from National University of Health Sciences. Dr. Russell has a concentration in the fields of biomechanics, gait analysis, gait therapy, and complicated movement disorders, and he has 10 years of experience with resistance and aerobic exercise adaptations and speed development. Dr. Russell lectures regularly on the treatment and prevention of athletic injuries and on speed development in athletes. His clinical interests are conservative musculoskeletal medicine with particular emphasis on running injuries, foot and hip pain, and overuse injuries.

Zac Thiele, MS, LAT, ATC
Director of Sports Medicine
Zac has his M.S in. Sports Management from the University of Tennessee and his B.S. in Athletic Training from Purdue University. He started his athletic training career as an internship with the Buffalo Bills from 2008 - 2009. He was a graduate assistant for the University of Tennessee football team from 2010-2012. After graduation he was the head athletic trainer for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G-League from 2012 - 2014 and at Bishop Dwenger HIgh School from 2014- 2018. He has been in his role with OPS as the director of sports medicine since 2017. Outside of work you can find him enjoying the lake with his wife and two sons. He is the jack of all trades and is always taking on new house projects. He enjoys gaining as much useless information as possible through listening to podcasts on his commute to work.

Dr. Nick Goins, DC
Director of Health and Wellness, Chiropracter
Dr. Goins has his Doctorate of Chiropractic Medicine Degree and his B.S. in Human Biology from National University of Health Sciences, and his B.A. in Biology and Molecular Biology from Coe College. He has taken courses in Primal Reflex Release Technique, Advanced Orthopedics and Gait Analysis, Global Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention, Be Activated, and coursework from Postural Restoration Institute. He also earned his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification. He utilizes aspects from all of these techniques and works them into his own framework when working and evaluating patients. He regularly lectures on injury prevention and athlete development. When not at work, you can find Dr. Goins spending time with his, Jamie, and 2 children. He also enjoys reading, watching movies, exercising to try and prevent dad bod, and searching financial literature to find the next big stock about to make a run.

Dr. Lucas Berghoff, D.O.
Sports Physician
Lucas Berghoff, D.O., is a board-certified Family Medicine and Sports Medicine physician specializing in Sports Medicine. He focuses on sports-related injuries and recovery, providing non-surgical treatment to competitive athletes, weekend warriors, and active individuals. Non-surgical care may include osteopathic manipulative treatment, bracing, and the use of ultrasound to guide imaging, injections, and procedures. Dr. Berghoff's medical interests include biomechanics, running medicine, ultrasound guided interventions, and medical problems in athletes. He actively subscribes to the philosophy that "movement is medicine" and wants to get all of his patients moving at the level they desire. He is actively involved with the care of athletes at many of our OPS affiliated schools. Outside of medicine, Dr. Berghoff can be found spending time with his family trying out new restaurants, traveling, and getting outside to do something active.
